What is an LTO 5 Tape?

With the new generation technologies available, there are a lot of different storage devices out there. But nothing says data storage like the great solution that is LTO 5 Tapes. This type of storage media is one that can store a massive 1.5 TB of pure data. The size of the LTO tapes, particularly the 5th generation is rather small but the data storage capacity is very high for devices within this same class. Read more…

The companies behind the LTO Tape program, HP, IBM and Quantum have announced the future of the product, providing details for the next two generations, LTO 7 and LTO 8.

The LTO community breathed a sigh of relief after the LTO consortium announced a roadmap for the next generations of LTO Tape. LTO 7 and LTO 8 have been added to the LTO 6 program roadmap. The plan is for LTO 7 and LTO 8 to have native capacities of 6.4 TB and 12.8 TB respectively. This will allow for compressed capacities of 8 TB for LTO 6 Tape, 16 TB for LTO 7 Tape and 32 TB for LTO 8 Tape, allowing LTO users to store a greater amount of their data whilst using less storage.

Gary Bennion, Ecommerce Manager of LTO supplier iClickDataStorage commented “It’s great news that the LTO consortium have announced these plans. It reassures the LTO community of what’s coming next. People where uncertain of what was going to happen after LTO 6.”

The transfer rates of this new generation of LTO Tape are expected to increase by 50% from that of LTO 5 Tape, with this increase being incremental on each release. LTO 6 Tape is expected to have a native transfer rate of up to 210 MB per second, LTO 7 Tape 315 MB per second and LTO 8 Tape 472 MB per second.

The LTO Tape program also announced plans for feature enhancements to LTO 5 Tape, creating a large storage capacity of 3 TB, double the capacity of LTO 4 Tape. There are also plans for enhanced partitioning functionalities that will help improve space management and version control, meeting the growing needs of the market.

All new generation LTO drives are going to backwards compatible so that they will work with LTO 3 Tape and LTO 4 Tape, protecting investments for the future.

It is anticipated that LTO 6, LTO 7 and LTO 8 will be available for use by the LTO storage community in two years’ time. In the meantime the feature enhancements to LTO 5 Tape are available for release immediately.
